POWERbreathe EX1 EMT Devices

picture showing exhalationThe POWERbreathe EX1 is a hand-held, drug-free, expiratory muscle training (EMT) device, developed to improve your expiratory muscles’ strength, function, and endurance. It provides resistance as you breathe out through the device, making your expiratory muscles work harder to improve breathing strength.

The POWERbreathe EX1 uses the ‘pressure threshold’ method of breathing training, which is like weightlifting. You progressively adjust the ‘weight’ lifted to make your training harder (or easier) as your expiratory muscles become stronger.

The typical training protocol for expiratory muscle training is 25 breaths, made up of  5 x exhales, 5 times a day, for 5 days per week.

Why EMT is Beneficial

You will benefit from stronger expiratory muscles if you feel the need to forcefully empty air from your lungs, such as when you cough, play a wind instrument or sing. You will also find it beneficial if you have a medical condition that results in difficulty swallowing or difficulty speaking.

Furthermore, because you begin to lose muscle strength as you get older, which includes breathing muscle strength, improving the strength of your breathing muscles with Expiratory Muscle Training and Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) will help to maintain and improve your breathing strength.

Stronger expiratory muscles are also beneficial for sportspeople wishing to improve their sports performance because expiratory muscle fatigue impairs performance.

Why Choose POWERbreathe EX1 EMT

picture showing inhalation & exhalationEMT and IMT when performed within the same breath cycle, can actually impair training responses. This is because the concurrent loading of both breathing phases (EMT and IMT) is uncomfortable and difficult for achieving maximal effort.

The POWERbreathe philosophy is for breathing training to be comfortable, manageable, and as effective as possible. That’s why we have created four EX1 models that exercise the expiratory muscles (EMT) independently of the inspiratory muscles (IMT).

The EX1 is available in 4 models, each with a variable load setting to allow for variations in expiratory pressure. This means we are able to offer the widest range of resistances in the market, for a better user experience. View Comparison Chart.
